(Tour of a mussel company and the oyster pits, lunch, a tour of Zierikzee and free time)
Fishing has been, and still is, an important source of income for the people of Zeeland. This is only logical if you consider how much water, and how much fish there is in Zeeland. The local fishermen are still active, especially in places like Yerseke. Yerseke is the centre of Zeeland´s mussel and oyster industry, and will be the destination for this excursion. When you arrive, there will be an introductory film about mussel fishing, followed by a look at an ultramodern mussel company where the mussels are prepared for sale fresh from the water. A guide will take you to the picturesque oyster pits where the shellfish are stored for sale followed by mussels for lunch in Yerseke to end the morning´s activities.
You will spend the afternoon in Zierikzee, a picturesque and historic city on the Oosterschelde estuary with lovely shops and plenty of pavement cafés to enjoy. There is a marina and it is home to a fleet of fishing boats. There is also the Museumhaven (museum harbour) that is home to a collection of historic ships. A guide will show you the sights of Zierikzee, including Saint Livinus’ Monster Tower, which is known locally as the Dikke Toren (literally the fat tower), as well as the harbour. After the tour you'll have some free time to yourselves.
