Quiet village squares, quaint, historical harbours, cobbled streets and sweet shops... Whether Zeeland is picturesque or not, isn't even a question. In fact, Zeeland is breath-taking, whether you’re strolling through the streets of historic Middelburg or enjoying the tranquillity of the village square in Nisse.
Middelburg at its most beautiful: Abdijplein Square
Middelburg's historic city centre is grand and inspiring. One of the most beautiful places in the city is Abdijplein Square. It is a perfect place to shelter from the summer sun in the cool shade of the trees. There are no cars, no hustle and bustle and no fuss: just the magnificent buildings of the abbey all around you. The square plays host to concerts during the Zeeland Nazomerfestival and the International Jazz Festival Middelburg and it is such a special location, that the performances always gain a certain fairy-tale quality. Should you wish to see inside the abbey's buildings, you can book a tour that will wow you with the cloister's old hallways, the abbey's chapels and much, much more.
Veere is sweet enough to eat
Veere is a small, historical town that is sweet enough to eat. It has gorgeous cobbled streets and lots of delightful little sweet shops. Close to the waterfront there are impressive, historical buildings like the town hall and the Campveerse tower as well as large merchant's houses along the quayside. In the time of Napoleon, the town was of significant strategic importance and the defensive walls that were built then can still be seen in and around the town. You can still walk along the town's walls, which have fantastic views out over the Veerse Meer Lake and over the town too. Should you wish to get to know the history of the town even better, we can recommend booking a guided tour.
The magnificent port of Zierikzee
Large historical town houses remind us of the Zierikzee´s prosperous past as do the beautiful gatehouses and its port. Wherever you walk, you’ll bump into elements from history. One you won´t be able to miss is the 62-metre high Sint-Lievensmonstertoren (Saint-Livinus Monster Tower) which gives an amazing aerial view of the city. The city´s port has played a considerable role in the wealth of Zierikzee and the surrounding area over the centuries and is certainly worth a visit. Should you wish to find out more, then we can recommend a guided tour with one of the tourist information offices’ expert VVV-guides.
Pretty as a picture: Nisse
If you ask someone from Zeeland where you might find the most beautiful village square in the whole of the region, they are most likely to say Nisse. Nisse has a large fourteenth-century church and an avenue of tall trees along the elongated village square. The trees provide plenty of shade in the heart of the village and there is a duck pond that was once an ancient watering hole and an attractive old-fashioned bandstand. The square is surrounded by sweet shops and beautiful, historical farmhouses. It´s an absolute picture!
The same can be said for the surrounding area too and we can recommend walks and cycle tours over Nisse´s flower-lined dikes. Tip: Why not plan your very own scenic route using The Walking Network or The Cycle Network.
