About Zeeland

Wide, clean, easily accessible and sandy beaches; an isolated cove where you can let the sound of the surf wash right over you or a busy beach with an excellent choice of sporting activities: Zeeland has it all.

Soak up the spring sunshine in front of your beach caravan with a good book; lounge at a stylish beach club whilst the sun goes down; dive into the waves until you run out of breath or watch one of the province’s spectacular autumn storms in wonder. Whatever you choose, the superb sand and sea is here all year round.

Delta Works

After the North Sea floods of 1953, the Dutch authorities decided to construct more effective coastal defences in the Zeeland Delta. These coastal defences are known as the Delta Works and comprise a series of dams, the most impressive of which, is the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier (Oosterscheldekering). In addition to protection from the sea, the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier has made room for beautiful nature and recreational areas for water sports, sunbathing, walking and cycling.

Dive into the history of Zeeland

The history of Zeeland has been shaped by the sea. Water has defined the character of the region’s people, not only because of their battle against the tide but because of the opportunities the waterways have brought them. Especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, maritime trade brought Zeeland to life.

More about the history of Zeeland

The people of Zeeland value tradition and are proud of their heritage. While people no longer walk around wearing traditional folk costumes, you’ll see many proudly wearing jewellery with the traditional wreath-like Zeeuwse knopdesign, and the much-cherished sport of tilting at the ring is still as popular as ever.
